My name is Heather, and I am a senior at UNCG, a double major in Art and Liberal Studies, and a lover of all things creative. I am 33-years-old, and younger than ever. It was a long hard road to where I am now, and I am proud of my tenacity, integrity, ability to survive and love fiercely. I am not afraid to put myself out there…and I love to learn more than anything else. I also love to find beauty in the darkest, ugliest places, and the truth that lies beneath everything.
Are there perceived emphases in popular culture that concern me? Most definitely.
I am a true advocate for the freedom of expression, as well as the freedom of choice. There are many things out there that I don’t agree with or like, but I’m thrilled to have the right to express, and the right to turn the channel, the page, or my head.
I cannot write about my concerns in popular culture without first turning my attention to how the media presents women. I’m not talking about fiction and fantasy, in context, so much as in advertising or in a victimized or misogynistic light. I wish I had grown up without the undeniable pressure to be thin, perfect, sexual, virginal, smart, compliant, and owned, all at once. I feel like for every misrepresentation, there is a chance to learn something…and teach something.
I’m not too enamored with the way popular culture represents the face of our culture. I think there are so many subcultures and individuals who have so much more to give than what seems to appeal to the masses. I suppose I’ve always wandered off the path. I am one of the fortunate people in this world, who have the opportunity to explore all of the crazy and amazing stuff out there. I like to look for it in music, films, books and people.
I am happy to be looking at popular culture with the help of this course. Maybe I will learn something new, or see from someone else’s point of view. I am excited about looking at the occult and metaphysical philosophy, in particular. I have a secret love for psychological thrillers and scary stories. I like questioning reality and its boundaries. This class is going to be good stuff.
